BREAST SELF EXAM (BSE) IS THE BEST WAY TO EARLY DETECTION OF BREAST CANCER IN COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Jakarta, YKPI – A radiologist at Dharmais Cancer Hospital Jakarta, Dr. Kardinah, Sp.RAD said that Breast Self Examination (BSE) is the best way to detect breast cancer in the midst of Covid-19 pandemic.

Besides being able to prevent the possibility of advanced stage of breast cancer, BSE that can be done at home, is also a form of women’s attention to the health of their breasts.

“If we go to the hospital for health checks, we have to keep physical distance, and all examinations will be carried out under the Covid-19 protocol, both in the waiting room and in the presence of medical staff,” explained Kardinah in the ‘Webinar series on Breast Cancer in the Covid-19 Pandemic: Is Early Detection of Breast Cancer still Possible to Do?’

“Therefore, I suggest women to continue doing early detection, especially the breast self examination (BSE). That way, we are aware of the health of our breast,” further said Kardinah in the event of collaboration between the Indonesia Breast Cancer Foundation (YKPI) and doctors at Dharmais Cancer Hospital.

Kardinah continued that breast self examination should be done regularly after passing through the menstrual period, which aims to avoid pain in the breast.

There are three recommended ways to do BSE namely: stand facing a mirror with your hands up; do touch while bathing; or lie down with your hands behind your head.

“What you should do is turning your hand clockwise and don’t forget to press the nipple. Because there is also breast cancer that causes liquid comes out from red nipple,” explained the Head of Medical Committee of Dharmais Cancer Hospital.

Meanwhile, YKPI Chairperson Linda Agum Gumelar emphasized that YKPI has a vision of Indonesia Free of Advanced Stage of Breast Cancer in 2030.

The Minister of Women Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA) in the United Indonesia Cabinet era said that the target could only be reached if community awareness to take early detection continues to grow, both by doing Breast Self Examination (BSE) and Clinical Breast Examination (CBE) routinely once a month.

“70% of breast cancer patients who come to the hospital or see doctors are already in advanced stage, so that their life expectancy is small. So do the breast self examination because it can prevent the cancer going to advanced stage,” ended Linda.
